The Corporate Wife

Open Letter to the Incoming Corporate Wife…

Dear New Corporate Wife,

Welcome to your new position. Welcome to an exciting job change for you both and your family. Welcome to your new city and your new home. Your spouse has been promoted. Congratulations and welcome.

We should also give you a medal and a huge CONGRATULATION. Welcome! You are now a guppy and at the bottom of the ocean food chain, also known as corporate life. Cheers!

Welcome to your new life. Trust me, I know first hand how this whole thing works. This past year my life changed. I went from successful businesswomen, owning, and running a company to being a stay-at-home corporate wife.

I have to say, I was rather offended by the term “Corporate Wife” whenever I heard it. It made me feel like I was some kind of husband follower, living off his coattails and his status. A year later, I’m embracing it.

What is a “Corporate Wife”? Is it like a “Military Wife”? Let’s face it a “Military Wives” are the bomb! They are in a class of their own. Complete with the build in titles of “Wife of the Year” & “Mother of the Year” their job is hard!

What is a “Corporate Wife”? Well, it is more than the “wife” and more than the “CEO of the Household”. The “Corporate Wife” also has lots of responsibilities. Of course, you have the obvious tasks of keeping up with the family, raising the children, and caring for the home. Simply put, everything that goes on inside your home is your responsibility, and you need to make sure that you know exactly what is going on, as well as making sure that everyone is safe. The role of a “Corporate Wife” is not for the faint-hearted, and if you know that your house and family are safe, then you can focus on the things that really matter, like possibly working on your own career from home.

There are some other requirements that go with your new title. You know, besides keeping the hubs happy and reducing his stress. It is also a fabulous host! A small talker to entertain the non-corporate spouse and a quick thinker to keep the children happy!

Be sure to know the “plan”! You know how long he will be or wants to be in the current position, what his next potential position in the company should be, and where he wants to go in the next five years and maybe next ten years. Be careful not to disclose too much.

You should know his goals like you know your address and be able to state that clearly to anyone who asks. You should also know his past career path within the company and maybe with other companies.

Corporate parties, holiday parties, & birthday parties can be fun and tricky. The Corporate wife has to watch their every move, their alcohol intake, their children’s behavior, their tongue, and their spouses at social engagements. One slip-up and a new position could be on the line. Attitudes do not work. A positive nature is what you have to possess.

Know your stuff. The best school, the greatest doctors, and the finest restaurants because you will be the one that the newly transplanted corporate wives turn to.

Congratulations on your new positions,

Sincerely,

Senior Corporate Wife

Thankfully my husband’s job doesn’t require any socializing on my part, or no doubt my awkwardness would have gotten him accidentally fired. 🙂

This was my first time ever hearing that term used! Too funny! I also tip my hat to the military wives in our country!

Great post! My husband’s job doesn’t require quit so many social situations- they don’t even have a holiday party any more because no one ever went! But it is important to know who each person is in the company!
