We are fake tree people! Real trees are beautiful, but we’ve been Floridians for way too long, and real trees just don’t last that well in the Florida heat. The truth be told, I think our little Yorkie would eat all the fallen pine needles. I also feel like I’m saving the environment by having a fake tree and recycling it every year! And I like the fake ones. I love the wonderful pine scent of real trees. However, they make an amazing pine scented candle. Check out our tips for How to Clean an Artificial Christmas Tree.
Every year we take down our Christmas stuff from the attic, shop for more stuff to add to our growing collection of Christmas decorations and decide what color scheme we are going to do. This year we decided to set up three trees, 1 is our large family tree where Santa drops off all the presents, the other is the little tree we put in the entrance hall, and Little Dude has a tiny tree in his room.
How to Clean an Artificial Christmas Tree, Wreath, or Garland
1. Remove the tree, wreath, or garland from whatever you are storing it in
2. Separate the parts, sections. Be careful of the wires if pre-light.
4. Use Swifter Dusters to dust off branches.
5. If pre-light, check to make sure all the lights are working, replace any bulbs that are out.
Happy Cleaning!

Hi, Sarah! This is a great tip! I think cleaning up a Christmas tree is possibly the most annoying part of setting it up and down eventually, because of all of the parts that can be broken in the process. I was wondering, how much time do you need to put up all of the decoration in your house for holidays?

Really good to know this.
Never knew dust would be collected amongst my tree.
Thnx a lot for providing valuable information š
I had always wondered how to do this. Not going to lie, if it starts to get too dirty, I usually just throw it away and get a new one because I was at a loss on how to clean it thoroughly.
We’ve been using artificial trees for years now. Before setting it up, I wash the tree down. Literally. I do that before the first snow fall so I can be sure it dries up good. If the weather won’t permit that kind of cleaning this year, I will opt for vacuuming it instead. Thanks for the tips!
I am totally a real tree kind of girl. Hubby bought home a Charlie Brown looking fake tree one year in an effort to save money and I absolutely refused to use it. It could have benefitted from a cleaning, it was in the shed a couple of years before I gave it away.
We decorated our tree last week, as per the kids request. Yes, the tree can be very dusty, even when you store it in the box.
This is really good info. I will be completely honest, I did not know you had to clean a fake Christmas tree. I wonder how gross mine is! It’s over 20 years old!
This is really helpful! Last year we didn’t put ours up because we thought our cat would try to climb it. We’ll have to vacuum it and bring it out now that the cat is calmer!

I have actually never thought about cleaning our artificial tree before. It’s probably covered in a whole layer of dust.
Do you know I have never thought about cleaning an artificial tree, I never seem to keep one long enough perhaps, but next time I get one I shall have to keep on top of it!

What a great idea to keep your tree looking new year after year. I never knew exactly how to clean these.
This is such a useful information. I just recently took out of the box our previous Christmas tree and it really has a lot of dust and I am not sure if I can wash it. Vacuum seems more practical way.
Great cleaning tips to remember for cleaning our fake trees. We alway put out in plastic to store and helps keep the dust off.
What a great idea to keep the tree looking like new. I’ll have to give mine a good cleaning when I take it down.
Here in Indonesia we always do the artificial tree. That’s all I know for all my life. Your tips, I will definitely share it with my mother. This will comes in handy. I usually stay away from the tree once they’re pulled out of the boxes because the dust makes me sneeze lol. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you for this! I have an artificial tree that I want to keep clean. We are fake tree people too š Much easier!

Live Christmas trees are beautiful and smell so good, but I went faux years ago and I’ve never looked back. I love your ideas on cleaning the Christmas tree and I always have the vacuum nearby for all the messes.
Growing up my parents had an artificial tree and I can guarantee that it was never cleaned once. Now that Iām grown up, we only get real trees š
I never thought about cleaning the tree or wreaths, but it totally makes sense. Dust collects throughout the year whether it is in storage or not. Great tips, thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you! Thanks for stopping by!
So good to know!!! Our main tree is real, but we used your tips for the garland I just pulled out to hang up around the house – very timely š
Oh great! Glad I could help!
I’m a big fan of the artificial tree! Love it – and never thought about cleaning it, but I do good when storing all my items in dust free/sealed containers, so that helps, but next year I’ll have to check when I unpack and see!

I’m not ready to decorate yet! I have so much I have to do/make! But it’s almost time to set it all up. We live in the North, and use a fake tree too.
