This Teach Kids How to Apply Sunscreen post was sponsored by La Roche-Posay as part of an Influence Central campaign, and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.
Living in Florida, we primarily experience sunshine and summer all year round. Living closer to the beach makes the beach our playground for fun playdates and family outings. Walks on the beach. Protecting my family from the sun is super important to me. Applying sunscreen is like applying moisturizer. We don’t leave home without it. The sun’s rays can be harsh, and it is so important to protect your skin even if you’re just out for a minute to get the mail or run errands to a few stores.
Teach Kids How to Apply Sunscreen
- Teach kids how to take care of their skin.
- Make applying sunscreen part of the morning routine. Apply sunscreen first thing in the morning before you leave the house. Let them know they need sunscreen whenever they are outdoors.
- Teach kids to reapply sunscreen. Little Dude knows to reapply sunscreen while at school or camp to prevent a sunburn. According to the Skin Cancer foundation, just 5 sunburns before the age of 20 can increase the risk of melanoma by a startling +80%.
- Don’t just put sunscreen on them. Teach kids how to be an active participant and teach them how to help apply sunscreen.
I recently tried the My UV Patch App (for ios & Android) by La Roche-Posay on Little Dude. As well as Anthelios 60 Dermo-Kids Sunscreen and Cicaplast Baume B5. The My UV Patch is super cool. It is the first-ever stretchable skin sensor designed to monitor UV radiation in real-time to help measure UV exposure and risk in real time. It sends alerts to my iPhone.
Loved how smooth and not sticky La Roche-Posay newest sunscreen just for kids, Anthelios 60 Dermo-Kids is. It’s a sunscreen developed with moms, dermatologists, and pediatricians, and is specifically made with powerful UVA/UVB filters that provide broad spectrum, 80-minute water resistant protection, highly protective ingredients and antioxidants that are effective, safe, and gentle on children’s sensitive skin. (200 ml $19.99, 300 ml $29.99 ). Check it out, it’s available at CVS and Amazon.

I really liked your article it is inspiring.
Omg, I love that bag! I need something to carry my sunscreen in.
I need to be better at TEACHING me kids to do this. I typically just have to catch them and they now grudgingly hold still for an application, and reapplication. I really need my oldest – a very fair redhead – how important it is so she takes on the responsibility to reapply when I’m not around.
Growing up, once we got to a certain age, my mom made us put it on ourselves. I can see now why she did!
This is such an important skill to teach kids – it’s a lifelong one. I still wear sunscreen every day!

This is really helpful. We should not just stop at applying sunscreen on our kids but we must teach them the importance of why they need to apply sunscreen.
Both of my girls are on swim team, and for summer swim team, they are at the pool 5 or more days a week. Needless to say we clock a lot of hours at the pool. I am so careful about sun protection especially with my kids being very fair. I will have to check out these products – while swim team has wrapped up, we are going to Mexico soon.
Speaking from experience, this is ENORMOUSLY important. I’ve burned more than I can count. It’s a skill that everyone should know how to god.
I just went to the beach this weekend and saw so many parents applying sunscreen to their kids.
Also important to to explain why it is so important to apply sunscreen. Takes showing them and some practice for kids to get it correct.
Although my 12 year old daughter knows how to apply it, I worry that she probably doesn’t use enough of it. Which is a common mistake that many people, of all ages make. We live in Florida, right along the gulf coast, and are in the sun all the time. I make it a habit to put sunscreen on her every time we are going to be outside longer than 30 minutes. Btw, I love this brand! It’s now my go to sun screen!
Making sure your kids know how to apply suncream once they are old enough is a must, after all it is so important to make sure you skin is looked after and cared for.

OMG, I’ve drilled this into my son since he was a little boy. Now if I can get him to put on regular lotion….
We are avid sunscreen users and teach our kids to apply and reapply sunscreen according to directions. It’s so important to protect your skin from harmful UVA rays. You can’t see them but there damage is irreversible.

I am in the process of teaching my kiddo how to cover himself and centering. I am very OCD about sunscreen and I need to make sure he understands that too.

This is such an important skill. Skin protection is so vital and kids should be able to apply sunscreen by themselves for camp, school, etc.

This is a great way to teach kids the importance of taking care of their skin, especially when it comes to being out in the sun. I like the idea of teaching them how to apply their own sunscreen once they are old enough.

My kids probably could apply their own, but they would miss a bunch of spots. Right now, I feel better doing it myself, but I will teach them when they are older.
