    DIY Play-Doh

    ,

Little Dude is a busy kid. He is not a child that likes to just sit still. He always likes to be doing something; it can be anything. As soon as we finish one activity, he’s asking, “what’s next, mommy?” He’s my little energy bunny who never runs out of gas. He loves to know his schedule and what activities he has going on at all times. It can make for an exhausting day without a little of planning.

With the end of the school year quickly approaching, I’m gearing up for a fun-filled summer break with Little Dude. I’m getting a head start and organizing activities this year and our schedule for each week. Little Dude will be in camp for a few weeks in the mornings. I will still have to fill the afternoon with activities and keep him busy. I stock up on some craft supplies, and I also keep items on hand to make DIY Play- Doh for any rainy days.

    DIY Play-Doh

Little Dude loves to get messy and loves to make this DIY Play-Doh just as much as he loves to play with it. He says it is easier to roll out and create things with. It is non- toxic, and it can be stored in an airtight container for about three weeks. I like to add a few drops of food coloring to give it a little color and a few drops of Lavender essential oil to give it a great calming scent. Check out the recipe below.

    What You Need:
    1 cup flour

    1/2 cup salt

    2 teaspoons cream of tartar

    1 tablespoon cooking oil

    1 cup water

    3 drops Food Coloring (optional)

    Essential oils (optional)

    How To:

Spray the bottom and sides of a medium saucepan with cooking spray.

Mix into the medium saucepan the flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, and water.

Cook on a medium heat, constantly stirring for 3 minutes or until mixture pulls away from sides of the saucepan. It will have the consistency of mashed potatoes.

Remove from heat; let cool for 1 minute add few drops of food coloring and essential oils.

Then knead & roll the play-doh till it has a soft, smooth texture (you may have to add a sprinkle of flour if it is too wet).

Store the play- doh in airtight containers. It will stay good for about three weeks.

I love this because not only will they enjoy playing with it, they’ll enjoy making it too! I think I’ll try this with my son – I think he’ll be SO PROUD of himself and tell everyone, “I Made play-doh!!” Thanks for teaching me how to do it!
